Nativity Catholic Parish

Founded in 1960, The Church of the Nativity of Our Blessed Lord continues to serve the Catholics in Hollywood. Father Hugh J. Flynn, the first pastor, celebrated the first Mass in a tent large enough for 1,200 parishioners. Outreach ministries formed quickly, first the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and the Nativity Guild, followed by the Holy Name Society. Parishioners also began religious education classes.

The parish elementary school opened in 1961, classes housed temporarily at Chaminade High School until the construction of a new school building was completed. The Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Monroe, Michigan, staffed the school where 200 students in grades one through four were enrolled in its inaugural year. Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll dedicated the newly constructed church in 1968, and in that same year, a parish hall.

Parishioners added The Shrine of Our Lady of the Smile, The Blue Lantern Café, a gift shop, and a memorial to Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta to the church complex. They participate in numerous outreach ministries and spiritual enrichment activities in Spanish and English.
